Pastor Bruce Anthony Stark of the Hilltop Apostolic Church was arrested for stealing more than $100,000 from his churchCLEARLAKE -- A former Clearlake pastor was taken into custody earlier this month on a grand theft charge for allegedly embezzling more than $100,000 from his old church, a city police spokesman announced Wednesday.

Bruce Anthony Stark was arrested in Elk Grove March 16 on the outstanding Lake County warrant, Clearlake Police Sgt. Nick Bennett stated.

Authorities allege Stark, 62, of Stockton stole more than $100,000 in cash and property from the Hilltop Apostolic Church in Clearlake while working as a pastor there between 2002 and 2007.

Church members first brought concerns of vehicle theft, misappropriation of church funds and theft of church property to the attention of law enforcement in 2008, Bennett stated.

Clearlake Police Det. Carl Stein conducted a lengthy investigation, which included reviewing numerous cash transactions and loans involving church property in which Stark converted the funds for his personal use, according to Bennett.

The inquiry reportedly featured 26 interviews, years of bank statements and multiple county records.

The case was submitted to the Lake County District Attorney's Office for a complaint, and a Lake County Superior Court arrest warrant was issued last December, the sergeant stated.

Bennett alleged the Clearlake investigation revealed details of additional crimes possibly involving Stark in other jurisdictions.

Stark was booked into the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility March 20 and subsequently

posted $40,000 bail. He has a court appearance set for Tuesday, according to the jail website.
