Israeli police arrested Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger on the suspicion that Metzger pocketed hundreds of thousands of shekels(JTA) — Israeli police arrested Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger on the suspicion that Metzger pocketed hundreds of thousands of shekels meant for NGOs.

A raid of Metzger’s home and office, according to Israeli reports, took place on Thursday with the approval of Israeli Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein. Metzger was brought into Israel’s National Fraud Unit, and police confiscated documents and property during the raid. It is unclear whether police will release Metzger or hold him in jail.

Three associates of Metzger — two heads of NGOs and a chief rabbinate employee — were also arrested.

The investigation of Metzger was opened months ago after information implicating him in illicit activity reached police.

Metzger’s 10-year term as chief rabbi is set to expire this year. Elections to replace him will take place next month.
