August 2012 Submitted photo CLARINGTON -- Police have arrested an HIV-positive Courtice youth pastor, accusing him of attempting to arrange a sexual encounter with a teenaged boy.

The suspect, arrested Thursday, went so far as to attend a pre-arranged meeting, Durham police said. But the person the suspect had been corresponding with online was actually an undercover police officer.

Cops are expressing concern there may be more victims, citing the suspect's extensive social media presence.

Police allege the suspect began an online relationship with someone he thought was a 15-year-old boy, eventually arranging a sexual encounter at a residence. But he had actually been corresponding with a cop, and officers waited for him as he arrived for the rendezvous, police said.

Kris Allan Gowdy, 42, of Chester Lane, Newcastle, is charged with luring a child via computer and attempted aggravated sexual assault. He was taken into custody Thursday and held for a bail hearing.

The accused man is a youth pastor with the Free Methodist Church in Courtice and has travelled extensively over the past decade, serving as a youth counsellor in communities including Sussex, New Brunswick, Amherstview, Ontario, Saskatoon, and Rochester, New York.

The luring incident is in no way connected to the Courtice church, police said. Attempts to contact church administration Friday were unsuccessful.

Police said the man is HIV positive and had an "extensive" social media presence, using the profile name collegetoy2033.

Investigators want to hear from anyone who may have had contact with the man. Call 905-579-1520, extension 5363.
