The Cabool Police Department said Dr. Howell W. Burkhead, 61, pastor at First Baptist Church, was arrested and held following the 10:51 p.m. traffic stop. The officer initiated the stop for erratic driving.

According to Cabool police, Burkhead was charged with:

––Driving while intoxicated, first offense.

––Resisting arrest.

––Open container of intoxicants.

––Failure to exhibit insurance identification.

Burkhead was held 10 hours at the Cabool police station before he was released to a family member, authorities said. He is due in Cabool Municipal Court on Aug. 7.

Burkhead became pastor of First Baptist Church in 2007. His resignation was announced by a family member at the conclusion of Sunday’s morning worship service.
